The contract for the 4.9km Corrib tunnel under Sruwaddacon Bay was awarded to a joint venture between BAM Civil and Wayss & Freytag, both of which are subsidiaries of the Royal BAM Group.

The joint venture combines the vast tunnelling experience and expertise of Wayss & Freytag with BAM Civil’s expertise in the area of civil engineering work, plus its knowledge of and proven record in the Irish construction industry.

Works on site commenced in February 2012 with the construction of the launch pit in Aughoose. Installation of all the necessary surface equipment required to support the tunnelling operations was carried out in the summer of 2012.

Upon completion of the start shaft, the mix-shield TBM, supplied by Herrenknecht, was assembled in the shaft and tunnelling advance commenced in earnest in January 2013. Tunnelling operations continued on site on a 24/7 basis.

The tunnel reached its destination in early May 2014. This 4.9k tunnel is the longest tunnel in Ireland

Upon completion of the tunnel, a 20” gas pipeline was installed along with a number of other services before the tunnel was backfilled.
