Official Opening of Limerick Courthouse

5th March 2018

Chief Justice, Mr Justice Frank Clarke, and Minister for Justice and Equality, Mr Charlie Flanagan TD, officiated at the Opening Ceremony of Limerick Courthouse – one of seven courthouse projects being delivered by BAM Ireland under a Public Private Partnership (PPP).

The opening followed an historical event whereby the Supreme Court sat in Limerick for the first time, having visited Cork a number of years ago. The new courthouse, contains six courtrooms, including the largest courtroom in Ireland – which will primarily host sittings of the district court.

Located on the site of a former 19th century artillery barracks, known locally as Costello’s Yard, the courthouse is bounded by Mulgrave Street and Roxboro Road and is located close to Limerick Prison.

Courts in Drogheda, Letterkenny and Wexford have now been opened while the new and refurbished buildings will open soon in Cork, Mullingar and Waterford.
